Review: Shadows by Ilsa Bick (The Ashes Trilogy Book 2)

From Goodreads:

Shadows (Ashes Trilogy #2)

· The Apocalypse does not end. The Changed will grow in numbers. The Spared may not survive.

Even before the EMPs brought down the world, Alex was on the run from the demons of her past and the monster living in her head. After the world was gone, she believed Rule could be a sanctuary for her and those she’d come to love.
But she was wrong.

Now Alex is in the fight of her life against the adults, who would use her, the survivors, who don’t trust her, and the Changed, who would eat her alive.

Welcome to Shadows, the second book in the haunting apocalyptic Ashes Trilogy: where no one is safe and humans may be the worst of the monsters.

My Review:

Shadows (Ashes Trilogy, #2)Shadows by Ilsa J. Bick
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

How do I begin to describe my thoughts about Shadows?! It took me a long time to finish this book. Why? Because the first 1/3 of it was boring! I was so upset that I didn't read it for about 10 days after I got through that much of it. I loved Ashes! I felt like I had watched it as a movie, it was that captivating! Then I started Shadows and felt as if I were reading something from a different author. There were characters here that I did not care about. I didn't know them, therefore, I did not care what happened to them. The first 1/3 covered about 8 days! And this is a book that is over 500 pages. It was so slow, it was painful to read. I kept at it though because I knew how much I loved Ashes and I knew that there would be a third novel that would hopefully restore my faith in the series.

Having said all of this, I still give the book 4 stars. Thankfully, it got much better. The action picked up, and things began to make a little more sense.

In this book, the Changed are evolving into something much more dangerous. They are organized. They communicate with each other on an unspoken level. Alex's sense of them is still heightened, but she cannot quite figure out how they are adapting and communicating.

I want to say a lot about this book, but I don't want to give anything away! It is a lot more graphic in the violence, so don't plan on snacking during this one! There's also one semi-explicit sex scene.

Shadows is quite different from Ashes in that the perspective is not just Alex's this time. It jumps around a lot and is at times confusing and frustrating; but in the end, it makes sense and leaves us longing for more! It has a major cliff-hanger, just like Ashes did. I can't wait to see how this series ends.

Thank you to Anagha at http://www.book-spark.blogspot.com/ for sending me this book! I was a giveaway winner on her blog during a live chat with the author Ilsa Bick.

Review: Invisible (An Ivy Malone mystery) by Lorena McCourtney

Invisible (Ivy Malone Mysteries #1)

She's not your average crime fighter Ivy Malone has a curiosity that sometimes gets her into trouble, and it's only aggravated by her discovery that she can easily escape the public eye. So when vandals romp through the local cemetery, she takes advantage of her newfound anonymity and its unforeseen advantages as she launches her own unofficial investigation. Despite her oddball humor and unconventional snooping, Ivy soon becomes discouraged by her failure to turn up any solid clues. And after Ivy witnesses something ominous and unexplained, she can't resist putting her investigative powers to work again. Even the authorities' attempts to keep Ivy out of danger and her nosy neighbor's match-making schemes can't slow her down. But will the determination that fuels this persistent, quirky sleuth threaten her very safety?

My review:

Invisible (Ivy Malone Mysteries, #1)Invisible by Lorena McCourtney
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Ivy Malone is an LOL (little old lady) who discovers that she is invisible. Not in the literal sense, but people tend to see right through LOLs. This trait comes in very handy when Ivy decides to tackle crime in her town.

Invisible has some very cute characters in it and some very funny moments.

Filled with wit and charm, (and maybe even a future love triangle) Invisible is definitely a cozy read for a fall or winter day.

My Son's 15th Birthday

Things did not go as planned!

Yesterday was Kyle's birthday. The day started out ok. Work for me and school for him.  After I picked him up from school, we headed to the Guitar Store to pick up the Fender Squire pack he had ordered. Drove 35 minutes, got it, drove 35 minutes home.  Ordered pizza. Picked up the pizza. Kyle comes down saying the guitar does not work. It doesn't work?? It is brand new. But in fact it did not work! ARGH! I called the store. We had to TAKE IT BACK!

35 minutes there....both of us in a bad mood! Kyle because his birthday is not going as planned. Me because I'm exhausted and don't want to drive again! We got there and they checked it out and lo and behold it did NOT work! So they ordered us another one, this time to be delivered to our house. If it doesn't work this time, I am not going to be a happy camper! And Kyle will blow a gasket!

What ever happened to quality?? You spend $200 on something brand new, you expect it to come out of the package working! I guess in this throw away society, things will eventually be broken to bits before we get them soon :(

Review of Dying to Read by Lorena McCourtney

Dying to Read by Lorena McCourtney

 From Goodreads:

Cate Kinkaid is just dipping her toe into the world of private investigating until one of the many resumes she has floating around lands her a real job. All she has to do is determine that a particular woman lives at a particular address. Simple, right? When the big and brooding house happens to contain a dead body, this routine PI job turns out to be anything but simple. Is Cate in over her head?
Readers will be hooked from the very first chapter of this fast-paced and witty romantic mystery from bestselling and award-winning author Lorena McCourtney.

Dying to Read (Cate Kinkaid Files, #1)Dying to Read by Lorena McCourtney
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a very cute, easy read. Cate is a very likeable, inexperienced PI who lives with her aunt and uncle (who is also a PI). Through this book, she saves a cat (makes her #1 in my book), rescues someone from a tree, gets in some troublesome spots, and, of course, solves the crime. This is not a deep read by any means, but it is a fun break from all of the dytopians I've been reading lately :) If you need a cozy mystery, I suggest you grab some tea, some fuzzy socks, a lazy cat, and Dying to Read. I'm looking forward to seeing Cate solve some more mysteries.

I just picked up the first book from Lorena's Ivy Malone series. In the fall, I love to read cozy books that leave me with a good feeling.

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child

It is hard to believe, but Christmas is quickly approaching! Most of us are anticipating Christmas morning when our children can open their gifts, and Christmas afternoon when we can eat a delicious meal with our families and friends. But we are in the minority. Much of the world is without even basic necessities. They do not have the luxury of looking forward to even their next meal.

Thankfully, we have programs like Samaritan's Purse who help those who do not have what they need. Every Christmas they sponsor the Operation Christmas Child program. Here is a short story about what they do.

Samaritan's Purse

About Us

The story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37) gives a clear picture of God's desire for us to help those in desperate need wherever we find them. After describing how the Samaritan rescued a hurting man whom others had passed by, Jesus told His hearers, "Go and do likewise."

For over 40 years, Samaritan's Purse has done our utmost to follow Christ's command by going to the aid of the world's poor, sick, and suffering. We are an effective means of reaching hurting people in countries around the world with food, medicine, and other assistance in the Name of Jesus Christ. This, in turn, earns us a hearing for the Gospel, the Good News of eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Our emergency relief programs provide desperately needed assistance to victims of natural disaster, war, disease, and famine. As we offer food, water, and temporary shelter, we meet critical needs and give people a chance to rebuild their lives.

Our community development and vocational programs in impoverished villages and neighborhoods help people break the cycle of poverty and give them hope for a better tomorrow.

We impact the lives of vulnerable children through educational, feeding, clothing, and shelter programs that let them know they are not forgotten.

We provide first-class treatment in the Name of the Great Physician through our medical projects, as well as supplying mission hospitals with much needed equipment and supplies.

As our teams work in crisis areas of the world, people often ask, "Why did you come?" The answer is always the same: "We have come to help you in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ." Our ministry is all about Jesus—first, last, and always. As the Apostle Paul said,
"For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake" (2 Corinthians 4:5, NIV).

Samaritan's Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, Samaritan's Purse has helped meet needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God's love through His Son, Jesus Christ.

The organization serves the Church worldwide to promote the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Operation Christmas Child is just one of the ways to help those in need. To help a child this Christmas, follow this link!  Operation Christmas Child

Review: Rebel Heart by Moira Young

 From Goodreads:

Nothing is certain and no one is safe in the second book in the highly praised Dust Lands trilogy, which MTV’s Hollywood Crush blog called “better than The Hunger Games.” It seemed so simple: Defeat the Tonton, rescue her kidnapped brother, Lugh, and then order would be restored to Saba’s world. Simplicity, however, has proved to be elusive. Now, Saba and her family travel west, headed for a better life and a longed-for reunion with Jack. But the fight for Lugh’s freedom has unleashed a new power in the dust lands, and a formidable new enemy is on the rise. What is the truth about Jack? And how far will Saba go to get what she wants? In this much-anticipated follow-up to the riveting Blood Red Road, a fierce heroine finds herself at the crossroads of danger and destiny, betrayal and passion. Rebel Heart (Dust Lands, #2)

Rebel Heart by Moira Young

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am SO SO sad! I am done with this book and it will be awhile before the next comes out! That makes me want to cry! I LOVED this book! I really took my time with it because I wanted it to last as long as possible. (It is a good thing Shadows just came in at the library or I may have gone into a deep book depression.)

The characters that Ms. Bick added this time around are just as deep as in Blood Red Road. And the characters that we already know are further developed. They leap off the page at you. The setting is so vivid that you can see what is happening.

Saba goes through some serious stuff in this one! Not that she didn't in the first :) This time it is just so much deeper. The end of this is so intense! I cannot begin to explain how much I am longing for the conclusion.

I don't want to give one bit of the plot away, so I'll just leave it at this. Read this people! If you haven't read, Blood Red Road, what is wrong with you!?

I received an ARC of this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I was not required to do a review, but I love this book so much, I have to share!

Halloween Party Ideas

Cute Ideas for Halloween Parties

Having a Halloween party? Here are some really cute recipes from Family Fun for you to try.

For your drink, why don't you make some Swamp Juice?

Swamp Juice
  • 1/2 cup small tapioca pearls (found in the baking aisle of most grocery stores)
  • Food coloring
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 8 gummy fish
  • Seltzer water
  • Lemonade
  • 8 gummy worms
  1. MAKE THE EGGS: Bring 6 cups of water to a boil and add the tapioca pearls. Reduce the heat slightly and boil the pearls, stirring occasionally, for 20 to 25 minutes.
  2. COLOR THE EGGS: Divide the pearls, with the remaining water, between two bowls. Add 4 drops of food coloring (we used 3 drops of yellow and 1 drop of green in one bowl, and 4 drops of blue in the other) and 2 tablespoons of sugar to each bowl. Stir the mixtures, then allow them to sit uncovered for 20 to 25 minutes. Drain and rinse the pearls with cold water.
  3. ASSEMBLE THE DRINK: Spoon 2 tablespoons of pearls into each glass and drop in a gummy fish. Fill the glasses with seltzer water, then add a splash of lemonade. Place a gummy worm around a spoon as shown.

For your main dish, how about some Hot Dog Mummies? Kids love these!

Hot Dog Mummies

  • 1 11-ounce can of refrigerator breadsticks
  • 1 12-pack of hot dogs
  • Yellow mustard
  1. For each mummy, separate one breadstick from the roll and use kitchen shears or a knife to slice it in half lengthwise to create two thinner strips.
  2. Wrap one strip at a time snugly around the hot dog. Depending on the size of the hot dog, you may not need all of both strips. Leave about 1/2 inch of hot dog exposed for the face area and continue wrapping the top of the hot dog.
  3. Bake the mummies on a cookie sheet at 350ยบ for 15 to 18 minutes or until the breadstick wrapping is golden brown.
  4. Remove the mummies from the oven and cool them for 5 minutes. Add yellow mustard eyes just before serving. Makes 12 mummies.

These little creatures are a great way to get your kids to eat a couple vegetables.

Goblin Grins

  • 1 pea pod
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • few slivered almonds
  1. For each one, use the tip of a paring knife to cut a slit centered in one side of an edible pea pod (a parent's job).
  2. Cut out a tongue shape from red bell pepper and insert the top of it through the opening in the pea pod (it looks best if the inside of the pepper faces up).
  3. For the finishing touch, insert a few slivered almonds for teeth.

Finally for some yummy dessert, how about  Goblin Feet?

Goblin Feet - Image Collection
  • Half package (7 ounces) green meltable candy wafers
  • peanut butter cookies, such as Nutter Butter brand
  • cashew halves
  1. Follow the instructions on the candy wafer package to melt the wafers in a wide bowl. For each goblin foot, hold the edge of a cookie and dip it in the melted candy.
  2. Place the cookie on a sheet of waxed paper and use a spoon to smooth the candy over the spot your fingers covered.
  3. Place three cashew halves on the cookie for claws. (The candy may need to cool a minute or two for it to be stiff enough to hold the nuts in place.) Let the cookies set at room temperature.

Guest Giveaway Walking Dead Season 1 & 2 on Blu-Ray

When I heard about this giveaway opportunity, I had to jump on it! I am a Walking Dead freak! I love this show and cannot WAIT for season 3! Good luck all you fans! Welcome to the Walking Dead First & Second Season BluRay giveaway event hosted by Real Mom Reviews and Joy of Momma Joyner! One super lucky reader will win the complete first and second season of The Walking Dead on BluRay! The Walking Dead is an American post-apocalyptic television drama series developed by Frank Darabont. It is based on the comic book series The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. The series stars Andrew Lincoln as sheriff's deputy Rick Grimes who wakes up after being in a coma to find the world dominated by "walkers", resembling zombies. He sets out to find his family and other survivors along the way. Season one of The Walking Dead follows sheriff's deputyRick Grimes as he attempts to find his family and lead them to safety. The series begins with Rick waking up from a coma in an abandoned and badly damaged hospital. Leaving the hospital Rick discovers a post-apocalyptic world overrun with zombies (or "walkers", as they are referred to in-show). Rick also discovers his wife and son are missing. Acting on a rumor from a fellow survivor, he arms himself and begins a perilous journey to Atlanta, Georgia, where the CDC is said to have set up a quarantined "safe-zone" in the city, reasoning that his family may be there. Season two of The Walking Dead begins with Rick and his group of survivors escaping the CDC. They decide that Fort Benning would be their next destination. Along the way, they come across a traffic jam of abandoned vehicles on Interstate 85. The group loots several vehicles and, as a large herd of walkers approaches, are forced to hide under the vehicles. While in hiding Sophia is chased out from under the vehicle and is then pursued into the woods. The remaining group deals with interpersonal relationships while various searches for Sophia are performed. Carl is accidentally shot during the initial search by a hunter, Otis. Otis leads Rick and Shane to a large, isolated farm owned by a veterinarian named Hershel Greene. The survivors move to the farm while Carl recovers. The series has been well received by critics, and has received many award nominations, including a Writers Guild of America Award nomination and a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Television Series Drama. The series has also attained strong Nielsen ratings, beating various records for a cable series, including receiving 9 million viewers for its season two finale to become the most-watched basic cable drama telecast in history and we are so excited to give one lucky reader both the first and second season on Blu-ray! Giveaway is open to US and Canada and ends on October 30th at 11:59PM! Please make sure you read the Giveaway Rules before you enter!

My Beautiful Daughter's Senior Pictures

Molly's Senior Pictures

We had such an amazing time with our photographer Ashley Escola Photography ! She really took the time to get great shots of Molly and was so easy-going and fun to work with.  She has been uploading Molly's pictures to Facebook a couple at a time. These are a few she has done so far. I may be biased, but I think Molly is pretty enough to be a model :)
